The Online Edition of Discovering Music

Important

There are two things you need to know about the online edition of Discovering Music:

  • It contains the same video lectures and text as the hard-copy version.
  • The videos are streamed to your computer, not downloaded.

Here’s how it works.

You work at your own pace.  The course comes to you one task at a time.  You cannot skip ahead, but you can revisit already completed tasks.  For example, you will have access to the video of Unit 1 before you get the test for Unit 1.  You will not have access to Unit 2 until you complete Unit 1.  If you are in Unit 8 and want to revisit Unit 3, no problem.  You can go back to earlier materials as often as you wish and watch the videos multiple times.  Once you complete the course, you can revisit any part of it for an additional 90 days.  The printed materials in the course (text as .pdf) can be downloaded if you wish.  The videos are not available for download.

Many people enjoy the convenience of the online edition and the direct links to outside materials.  But this edition may not be right for you if you want to keep the materials on the shelf for eventual use with a younger child.

The musical examples are not included in the online edition because access to the music is readily available online at reasonable costs.  You could subscribe to the Naxos Music Library, for example, for about $20 per year and have access to literally thousands of tracks.  Don’t worry.  The online edition links directly to the Naxos Music Library and guides you to the specific selections that we recommend.

The online edition also features an automated quiz at the end of each unit.  Students receive a Certificate of Completion at the end.

With those differences in mind, please take a look at the course content.  You can even take a “test drive” of the system.  (Note: you may need to move the counter back to the start.)
